Fig Tree Nursery on the Upstairs Balcony
We had to move the Fig Tree nursery onto the balcony behind my father's bedroom, to keep the new seedlings safe from the Dik-Diks who would devour all the new leaves overnight, given half the chance. 22 October 2007 -
Septic Tank
OK, so I know this is our septic tank, and it's not very exciting, but it's meant to demonstrate how we have to be self-sufficient for everything, from power and water to internet communications and sanitation. 22 October 2007 -

This is the garden which borders our upstairs balcony all the way around the house - seen here to the left of the main verandah, and leading past my father's room. More news from October 23rd 2007... -
The view from our bedroom (23 October 2007)
It's not a bad view to wake up to, you've got to admit. Because our living areas is all on the top floor, we are able to sleep with all our windows and doors right open, which is lovely. It's almost like we are just another part of the Great Outdoors. More news from October 23rd 2007... -
Side view from bedroom (23 October 2007)
This area to the side of our bedroom will become the Hippo Lawn eventually, but at the moment it's being used for everything from a car workshop to a building site...so the view will improve in time, once it's allowed to grass over to attract the hippos and buffalos...More news from October 23rd 2007... -
Back / side view from bedroom (23 October 2007)
If you stretch around the corner of our side window in the bedroom, you can see the Commiphora thicket, where we water the trees (and have planted some new ones too, like Terminalia, Sterculia, Figs and Baobabs). This is a great place for photographing birds of all shapes and sizes which come to feed there. More news from October 23rd 2007... -

Don't forget to tuck in the loo roll! (23 October 2007)
We have to remember to tuck in the end of our loo roll, otherwise the wind unravels the whole thing! More news from October 23rd 2007... -
Bathroom Mirror and Sink (23 October 2007)
The bathroom mirror is framed by small river pebbles, and the basin is moulded around a natural wood fringe...it's a great design but it doesn't beat the river view in the mirror! More news from October 23rd 2007... -
The River Bath (23 October 2007)
This is our open-air bath, perfect for star-gazing on a clear night...even better to use as a plunge-pool in the midday heat. The view out over the river is breathtaking...More news from October 23rd 2007... -
Bath Plants & Taps (23 October 2007)
I've planted various succulents and other plants in the 'nooks and crannies' around the bath taps...in this case between the taps and where the water actually runs into the bath through its rock "doorway". News from October 23rd 2007... -

Lashed by the wind and rain...(29 Nov 07)
It's hard to depict wind and rain in a photograph, but even the aloes in our balcony flowerbeds looked like they were being blasted sideways in the gale-force winds and heavy rain that fell this evening. More news from 29th November 2007... -
