WHAT & WHERE IS KULAFUMBI?

1724670-982768-thumbnail.jpg 'Kulafumbi' is our family home in Kenya, East Africa. 'Kulafumbi' is a play on the Kiswahili words "kula vumbi", which mean "eat dust", because it was so hot and dusty building our house in this remote, wild, wonderful place. Kulafumbi borders the Tsavo National Park - with no fences between us and the Park, the wildlife comes and goes of its own free will and treats our land as its own, which is exactly how we like it. In turn, we provide a protected area for the wild animals to do as they please. This protected area also creates an important buffer for the river, which forms the boundary between us and the park.

"We are the music-makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems..."

19th October 2008 : A Full Moon Such As This...

14th October was full moon, and what a moon it was!

Whenever I look at the full moon, I rather wish that man had never walked on its surface, for I love the magic of the moon, and its pure perfection...The moon is better off without our footprints upon it, in my opinion! (Of course, there is that other school of thought, which claims that man never did set foot upon the moon...perhaps the conspiracy theorists might be right...who knows?)

Conspiracy theories or not, the full moon here at Kulafumbi, rising majestically over the Yatta Plateau, is always a wonder to behold from our east-facing balcony. While we sat and watched this full moon, four hippos lumbered past below the house, tramping through the mud at the river's edge like an army of wellington boots...shadows in the night, but hardly silent!

What a fantastic photo :)

We were lucky here in the UK - we also had a stunning full moon this month - stupidly, I didn't have my camera on me :(

Thanks, Imogen...I have to admit I was quite pleased with this one...amazing how clearly defined the craters on the moon are...first time I've taken a moon shot that has come out this well! :-)
