WHAT & WHERE IS KULAFUMBI?

1724670-982768-thumbnail.jpg 'Kulafumbi' is our family home in Kenya, East Africa. 'Kulafumbi' is a play on the Kiswahili words "kula vumbi", which mean "eat dust", because it was so hot and dusty building our house in this remote, wild, wonderful place. Kulafumbi borders the Tsavo National Park - with no fences between us and the Park, the wildlife comes and goes of its own free will and treats our land as its own, which is exactly how we like it. In turn, we provide a protected area for the wild animals to do as they please. This protected area also creates an important buffer for the river, which forms the boundary between us and the park.

"We are the music-makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems..."

25th April 2008 : Absence

Apologies for my long absence... I am traveling at the moment, and "up to my ears" in Board Meetings and other work-related "stuff" - I've got so much to catch up on so I will try to get back to my diary SOON.

By the way, while on my travels, I have bought myself a new camera, so hopefully you'll all be seeing the results of my purchase very shortly....

Tanya- Can't wait until you have time to blog, and can't wait to see your images! Which camera did you purchase?

I'm glad to see I haven't missed anything while away in Italy and Egypt but I've now started blogging again and I hope you do too - as soon as you're all caught up on life.

Hi All -

Thanks for "hanging in there"! Less than a week until I get back to Kenya. I love traveling but I also miss "our" river... Our trip to the US and the UK has been successful from a work point of view, but I am looking forward to getting back to Kenya now, and catching up with all our wild friends...I wonder if the Egyptian Geese have new goslings? Or if the Goliath Heron is still there, who seemed to have taken up almost permanent residence in the shallows below the house before we left...Do you think the Genet Cats might still come to the dinner table for scraps or will they be timid, and take time to get used to us all over again?

Tom, I splashed out and bought the Nikon D300, with two Nikon lenses: a 16-85mm lens to cover my wide angle shots, and an 80 - 400mm zoom for the wildlife and bird shots. I am now totally broke and penniless but so looking forward to getting started!

Back soon....

Thanks Suzanne - that's really kind of you!

We're flying back to Kenya tomorrow and so hopefully will be back at Kulafumbi and catching up with life on the river very soon...

I've heard really good reports on the D300! I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it. If you've been in the UK for the last few days, I'm glad the weather has been warm for you!
