Dry Bushland (a)
Less than 100 yards from the river, this is how dry the bushland is - apparently dead and lifeless at first glance...but as we know, that is far from the truth... (Photographed between the road and the 'old campsite', 22 October 2007 ) -
Dry Bushland (b)
Dry bushland less than 100 yards from the river's edge (between road and 'old campsite'. 22 October 2007 -

The Yatta has started turning green, seen here from the airstrip on the neighbouring property, looking out over the bushland. News from this day... -
The Peaceful Place (2 Nov 07)
This is the spot that I call 'The Peaceful Place', a flat area of sand near the river's edge, between the house and the well. The tall acacia trees, seen here looking golden in the evening light, harbour a menagerie of birds. You almost always see dik-diks here too, and often a troop of baboons passing through. I thought that it looked particularly lovely today. More news from 2nd November 2007... -
The Road to the Mtito Dam (22 Nov 07)
The road to our "dam" (weir) on the Mtito River runs through the top section of our property. It's not often you see it as green as this! This large Baobab tree, scarred by previous generations of feeding elephants, is one of my favourite trees at Kulafumbi. Read more news from today... -
Athi River Flood Debris (22 Nov 07)
We were walking by the river further upstream from our property, and came across this pile of debris, deposited by the flood on 17th November. It was a mass of branches, and dead reed stalks and the inevitable sprinkling of man-made rubbish. You can see by the height of the pile next to me, how much debris the river had deposited - testament to the force and strength of a big river in flood. Athi River Flood Debris (22 Nov 07)
Another angle on the debris left behind by the high water of 17th November. Read about the other things we discovered today... -

Low cloud over the Athi River (22 Nov 07)
This shot was taken further upstream from our property, showing a wide part of the Athi River, with low cloud over the Yatta Plateau behind. Read more news from today... -
Low cloud over a green Yatta Plateau (22 Nov 07)
Taken further upstream from Kulafumbi, this shot shows how low the cloud was hanging on the Yatta - but it didn't stop the sun sneaking through a little, and highlighting the green tinges of the rainy-season slopes. Read more news from today... -
Long shadows on the Little Serengeti (16 Dec 07)
We cast long shadows over the green carpet covering the Little Serengeti. The two large Delonix trees are also in full leaf after all the rain. News from 16th December 2007... -

A grassy meal for hippos (16 Dec 07)
You can clearly see the patterns made by the hippos in the grass, as they munch their way through it...here under the trees in the Peaceful Place. News from 16th December 2007... -

The Yatta Plateau (05 Dec 07)
The Yatta Plateau is said to be the longest lava flow in the world. It is the result of an ancient eruption of Ol Donyo Sabuk, a mountain up near Nairobi which, allegedly, used to be larger than Kilimanjaro, once upon a time...The Athi River (which becomes the Galana River, and in turn the Sabaki) flows along the base of the Yatta.
